As part of the British Engines Group, we maintain a focus on talent retention and have a strong commitment to local employment. Our apprenticeship and graduate schemes give us the opportunity to develop and nurture engineering talent from an early stage.

Apprenticeships

The training and development of apprentices is fundamental to our on-going success. Apprentices form over 10% of our workforce and almost 100% stay with us once their training is complete.

Since its establishment in 1966, the British Engines Apprenticeship+ scheme has trained thousands of engineering and commercial apprentices from the local area.

The British Engines Apprenticeship+ scheme was developed during 2012 as a result of our knowledge and understanding of the needs of apprentices training in our industry.

The unique scheme offers our apprentices the opportunity to learn and develop new skills in addition to those traditionally taught on a college apprenticeship. The extra vocational and classroom experience gives our apprentices a wider choice of careers within the company due to an increased knowledge base. In addition to four years of hands on experience, learning from and working alongside our engineering professionals, our apprentices attend college as well as outward bound training and several development courses.

For more information on the British Engines Apprenticeship+ scheme or read about Holly’s apprenticeship at BEL Engineering.

Graduates

We offer commercial and engineering graduate positions through the British Engines scheme.

The engineering graduate scheme offers a professional development programme, mentoring, responsibility and the opportunity to gain experience across a range of activities, from technical skills to product awareness, design and project management.

Greggs Breakfast Club

Investing in our local community is a priority for us. Sadly not all children start the day with a nutritious meal. The British Engines group is proud to partner with the Greggs Foundation to provide a free breakfast to those children who need it.

We work with two local schools, Walkergate Community Primary and St Vincent’s RC Primary, feeding 150 children each school day.

Community Sponsorship

We believe it is important to give back and support the vital work carried out within our communities.

The British Engines Community Fund provides funding to local charities, youth and community groups that are close to our employees’ hearts; which require support in order to keep up their good work.

Donation to the TDR Trust

In 2021, the British Engines Group donated £100,000 to the TDR Trust to boost STEM training in the North East. The donation will be used to improve TDR’s training facilities including the development of a STEM conference centre for North East employers, as well as further support to charitable trust school programmes to engage young people in STEM activities.

BEL Engineering is committed to finding ways to better the environment and reduce our carbon footprint. Find out more about our sustainability.
